Backblaze B2 egress: free to 3x storage, then a published price

Backblaze B2 gives every account free egress up to 3x its average monthly stored volume, then charges $0.01 per GB. That second number is what separates B2 from the other bounded-free providers: Wasabi and Impossible Cloud publish no price at all above their bounds, so B2 is the only one whose high-egress months can be budgeted from the published page. This guide covers the allowance math, the partner-CDN route to unlimited free egress, and the one thing Backblaze does not publish.

✓ Confirmed with vendor

Confirmed with Backblaze on 1 October 2026: free egress up to 3x average monthly storage, $0.01 per GB above it, and $6.95 per TB per month storage. Backblaze added one thing in the same reply: egress is also free on B2 Neo, its neocloud-scale tier, which its own page backs with “no egress fees”. The confirmation covers factual accuracy only. The framing, comparisons and conclusions on this page remain ours, the note is the vendor's to withdraw at any time, and the same protocol applies to every provider we cover. Verification is free and cannot be bought. How confirmations work

The allowance math

Worked examples at 20 TB stored
  • 40 TB egress: inside the 60 TB allowance, so $0.
  • 60 TB egress: exactly 3x, still $0.
  • 80 TB egress: 20 TB over the allowance. At $0.01 per GB that is $200 for the month (treating a TB as 1,000 GB, our labelled assumption).
The one thing Backblaze does not publish

How many GB are in its TB. The page quotes $6.95 per TB for storage and $0.01 per GB for overage without defining the conversion. Our calculator assumes 1,000 and says so on the Backblaze row, because silently picking 1,024 would change the overage figure by 2.4 percent. The 3x allowance itself is a ratio, so it is immune to the question.

Because the allowance is a function of what you store, B2 cannot be priced from an egress number alone. The calculator asks for your stored volume and refuses to print a Backblaze figure without it.

Where B2 sits among the free-egress providers

ProviderFree egress boundAbove the bound
Backblaze B23x average monthly stored volumePriced: $0.01 per GB, flat. Unlimited free egress through the listed partner CDNs.
Wasabi1x active storage volume per monthNo published price. The policy reserves the right to limit or suspend service for regular breaches.
Impossible Cloud1x actively stored data per month (fair-use guideline)No published price. The vendor confirmed to us that cases are handled case-by-case rather than charged.
Cloudflare R2None. Egress is free at any volumeNot applicable, but reads are metered as Class B operations at $0.36 per million on Standard storage.

B2's bound is the most generous of the three storage-relative ones, and it is the only provider here that prices the territory beyond its allowance. Compare Wasabi, Impossible Cloud and the R2 guide for the other three models.

Run your own numbers

The preset below is a deliberately heavy month: 80 TB out against 20 TB stored, which puts 20 TB past the 3x allowance and shows the $0.01 overage line with its source. Adjust either number and watch where the allowance lands.

Questions people actually ask

How does Backblaze B2's 3x free egress work?

Every B2 account gets free egress up to 3x its average monthly stored volume, with the monthly average calculated on byte hours over the billing cycle. Store an average of 20 TB and your free egress allowance is 60 TB that month. Egress beyond the 3x allowance is billed at $0.01 per GB.

What does Backblaze B2 charge for egress above the free allowance?

$0.01 per GB, published as a single flat rate with no volume tier table. Unlike Wasabi and Impossible Cloud, whose free egress has no published price above the bound at all, B2 puts a number on overage, which makes high-egress scenarios plannable.

How do I get unlimited free egress from Backblaze B2?

Backblaze publishes unlimited free egress when downloading to or through partner CDNs and compute services: Fastly, Cloudflare, bunny.net, CacheFly, CoreWeave, Equinix Metal, Vultr and phoenixNAP. Served through one of those, the 3x allowance does not come into play. There is also B2 Overdrive, from $15 per TB per month with unlimited free egress, which requires a multi-petabyte commitment, and B2 Neo, the neocloud-scale tier, carries no egress fees either, confirmed with Backblaze on 1 October 2026.

What does Backblaze B2 storage cost?

$6.95 per TB per month, billed on bytes stored per byte-hour, with the first 10 GB free. Class A, B and C API calls are free for pay-as-you-go customers; Class D transactions cost $0.004 per 10,000 calls after the first 2,500 calls per day. There are no minimum file size or minimum storage duration fees. Published rates are for the U.S. West region.

Is a Backblaze TB 1,000 or 1,024 GB?

Backblaze does not say. The pricing page quotes $6.95 per TB per month and $0.01 per GB without defining how many GB are in its TB. Our calculator treats a Backblaze TB as 1,000 GB and labels that conversion as our assumption, not a Backblaze figure. The 3x allowance is a ratio, so it is unaffected either way.

Backblaze B2 or Wasabi for a high-egress workload?

It turns on your egress-to-storage ratio. At or under 1x, both are free. Between 1x and 3x, B2 is still free while Wasabi's policy no longer covers the use case and publishes no price for it. Above 3x, B2 charges a published $0.01 per GB while Wasabi reserves the right to limit or suspend service. For egress beyond stored volume, B2 is the one with a number you can put in a budget.
