GCP Cloud CDN pricing

Google Cloud CDN has three cost layers: cache egress (per GB to user), cache fill (per GB from origin), and HTTP lookups. Cache egress starts at $0.08/GB in North America and Europe, dropping to $0.02/GB above 500 TB / month.

Cache fill, lookups, and invalidation

Cache fill from origin (same region)

$0.01/GB. Charged on first request (cache miss). For high-traffic sites with good cache hit ratio, this is small relative to cache egress.

Cache fill from origin (cross-region)

$0.02/GB to $0.08/GB depending on origin region. Avoid by placing origin in a region close to most users.

HTTP / HTTPS lookup

$0.0075 per 10,000 requests. Charged on every request, hit or miss. Higher for some routing rules.

Cache invalidation

First 1,000 invalidations / month free. Then $0.005 per invalidation. Avoid wildcard invalidations on hot paths.

Signed URLs / cookies

Free to generate, but every signed request still triggers a lookup. Use as access control, not as cost saving.

Cache key flexibility

Custom cache keys (e.g. excluding query strings) are free but can multiply cache fill if mis-configured. Test invalidation patterns first.

Cloud CDN vs direct GCS egress

Direct Google Cloud Storage egress (Premium Tier) starts at $0.12/GB. Cloud CDN cache egress in NA/EU starts at $0.08/GB. For any GCS workload serving public content, Cloud CDN saves $0.04/GB plus delivers faster from edge. The breakeven is the first cached response: at typical cache hit ratios above 70 percent, Cloud CDN always wins on cost.
